It's the best time at the racetrack again here at the Orange Park Kennel Club, and if you can't guess what I mean, I will spell it out for you.
S-T-A-K-E R-A-C-I-N-G T-I-M-E. Yep that's right, the best of the best will be competing once again to see who is the top dog here over the oval at Orange Park in the 2010 edition of the James J Patton Silver Cup.
This event will run over the 550 yard course with 7 races on August 20th, 7 more on August 23rd, cutting the field almost in half, 4 races on August 27th, and the semi-finals feature 3 races on August 30th. The finals of this event will take place on Saturday Evening September 4th.
Looking at the entries this race is really going to be something to follow. We have a great mix of stakes winners, over both 550 and 660 yards, stakes veterans and finalists, and a whole bunch of new talent that might just be able to show off a new trick or two to the competition.
Leading the charge has to be Paddy Whacker. The winner of the 2010 JGR Puppy Stakes, Paddy is the only stakes winner at 550 yards in the field. Recently he has not been breaking like he can, but when he sees the lead, no one at the racetrack can run him down before the finish line. If he gets back to breaking, like he did in the last stakes, this event will be his to lose.
The other stakes winner in 2010 in the entries is Eds Budby. Better over the longer 660 yard distance, this Orange Park Derby winner, will have to make a sooner charge to get things done over 550. He is well rested and looks up to the challenge as he won easily in his warm up race over this distance. If he gets it all together, he too could challenge for double stakes titles on the year.
Gm's Cashman might be someone to look out for as well. He was the winner of the Night of Stars feature race over 550 yards back in July. He is a solid breaker that always seems to be around at the finish line. Even though he has not won a ton of races as of late, he is always a threat to do so, and might just have a surprise in store for the favorites again in this race.
Other notables to mention:
DQ has Ru Tuff Enuf, Miss Romy and La's Silver who are all stakes finalist and who have all finished in the money in a final round race. Each has talents all their own and if any of them decide to run, they could go a long way once again in this stakes.
Lester Raines also has a talented group including the old and the new. Citation Cam and Uss Fine Touch are still around and making yet another run at a stakes title. Leading Steps is here too and don't forget he has made the money twice in two attempts against the best eight. The biggest surprise might be the Afleet Alex pups Really Xtreme and Really Gonnarock. Both are huge closers and can beat some talented fields beyond their years. Looking to make some noise like dear old dad, the pups might be the ones to shine brightest this time around.
Gs Ashlynn from Willis also has multiple stakes final experience, along with B & J's Wp's Commodore who was a puppy stakes finalist.
All in all another great field of greyhound ready to compete for the title in the James J Patton Silver Cup.
